The NCAA Division I Council voted to eliminate two-a-day practices.

The proposed rules were approved and set to go into effect in November.

However, a group of players and coaches requested an additional six-week option.

The Council then changed the rules to include a choice: six weeks of straight practices in camp, or one additional day of recovery on non-padded practices.

Those in favor of the shorter season argue that a longer season makes it more difficult to get ready for the season and more likely to be injured.

The NCAA released a statement saying that they “welcomed the work done by the working group and are committed to further collaboration and best-practice recommendations moving forward.”

The Council’s decision is part of their rules overhaul that they want implemented in November 2019.

The American Gaming Association also announced its support for six weeks of preseason football.

“In our study, in which we examined the impact of the NCAA-reported seasons from 2007 to 2019, we found that football injuries were particularly problematic and correlated with more sports-related injuries than all other major collegiate sports combined,” said Sara Slane, senior vice president of public affairs for the association.

“This points to the clear need for a break from preseason football and the need for rules that promote health and safety while also respecting coaches’ and student athletes’ demands for flexibility.”

Cleveland Browns GM John Dorsey believes it would be tough to impose such rules because NFL rules would have to change.

Ohio State announced its interim coach will be Urban Meyer.

That means offensive coordinator Ryan Day will take over the coaching duties for the rest of the season. The university announced Meyer’s decision Thursday, following a two-week investigation into what he knew and did about accusations of abuse made against former assistant Zach Smith.
